NDI, USB, HDMI or SDI: which PTZ output do you need?

The output decides how the camera reaches your computer or switcher, how long the cable can be, and what else you'll have to buy.

USB

Plugs into a laptop and shows up in Zoom, Teams, Meet or OBS like a webcam. Best for meeting rooms and single-camera streams. Cable runs are short (about 5 m without an extender).

HDMI

Into a video switcher or capture card. Common and affordable. Fine up to about 15 m; longer runs need fibre HDMI or an extender.

SDI

The broadcast standard: locking connectors and long runs (100 m and more) on coax. Good for big halls and events where cables get stepped on.

NDI

Video, control and often power over one network cable (with a PoE switch). Easiest way to run several cameras across a big building and control them from software. Needs a decent network switch.

Rule of thumb

  • One camera, one laptop: USB.
  • Two or three cameras into a switcher in the same room: HDMI.
  • Long runs or rental/event work: SDI.
  • Several cameras across a building, run from a computer: NDI.
